AFC Portchester’s final hopes of winning any silverware this season faded as they were knocked out of the Portsmouth Senior Cup by Southern League hosts Moneyfields.
Tuesday night’s defeat at the semi final stage of the competition means the Royals miss out on a return trip to Fratton Park after playing Havant and Waterlooville there in last year’s final.
It is also a measure of how disappointing this campaign has been for Portchester that their silverware dreams on all fronts were finished with this result before the season entered the month of March.
Moneyfields’ Southern League quality shone through in this encounter and the visitors never really looked like they could upset their higher ranked opposition.
Portchester did have the better of the opening exchanges and after four minutes Mike Turvey managed to fire off a shot on goal following a scrappy corner but home keeper Steven Mowthorpe gathered the ball safely.
However, the home side took the lead on 16 minutes when Sam Pearce headed home Conor Bailey’s corner.
Steve Ramsey’s long range effort for Portchester was saved by Mowthorpe and Royals keeper Charlie Searle got the better of Joe Briggs when he threatened to score before Moneyfields doubled their advantage on 34 minutes.
This time Briggs finished off a flowing move from the home side when he slid his shot past Charlie Searle.
Either side of half time Portchester had half chances to score - Kelvin Obaze cut inside and curled an effort on goal which was easily saved by Mowthorpe and there was no one there to capitalise on a good ball across the face of goal for the next chance for the visitors and home defender Brett Poate comfortably dealt with the danger.
Former Portchester defender Rob Evans then put his left foot shot wide and Steve Hutchings played a good ball into the path of Briggs but he blazed his shot over.
The visitors almost put the ball into their own net but Charlie Searle saved his team’s blushes and from the resulting corner Hutchings missed the target with his header.
Hutchings missed with two further headers before he turned provider for Moneyfields’ third goal with five minutes remaining.
The home striker played a perfect ball through to Lloyd Rowlatt and he finished off the move by shooting home.
Substitute Joel Jackson’s deflected shot had to be turned behind by Mowthorpe before the home side completed the scoring with the last kick of the game.
This time Briggs created the opportunity for substitute Nathan Clements to tuck the ball home from close range.
