Catlin rues defensive errors after Royals defeat to Hamworthy.

By Patrick Austen-Hardy

AFC Portchester manager, Mick Catlin rued his side’s defensive errors as the Royals lost 3-1 at home against Hamworthy United.

Despite a strong start in which Charlie Cooper early low drive was tipped around the post by Hamworthy keeper Tom Rees, but fell behind when James King’s header from a lofted free-kick squirmed under Portchester Keeper Matt Fisher.

The away side only needed nine minutes to double their advantage, this time James King turned provider when he beat Ben Buckland on the right hand side and crossed for Ed Hodge who hit a cool side foot volley which wrong-footed Fisher in the Portchester goal.

Catlin was frustrated with the manner of how the goals were scored.

“I’m not happy in the way we defended,” said the Royals manager.
“The goals we gave away were poor goals and could have been avoided really.”

Mike Turvey’s low drive from 18 yards halved Hamworthy’s deficit just before half-time and paved the way for the home side to dominate the second half.

Tom Rees was excellent in the Hamworthy goal, making vital saves against Turvey and Craig Hardy.
Despite, Portchester’s second half dominance, they could not find the net and Hamworthy scored a late break-away goal when Luke Stone beat the offside trap and slotted the ball Fisher.

“We can take some positives from the game,” said Catlin.
“The fact that we dominated the second half and we created a lot of chances, if we weren’t creating them, then it would be a lot more of a worry.
“At the same time we have to sort out our defence, we can’t keep shipping three goals a game and expect to win.
“Until we get that sorted it’s going to be very difficult to win games, you have to be good in both boxes.”

The defeat is a huge blow for the Royals after they dramatically beat Hamble FC 2-1 last Tuesday to end their 15 winless run.

Catlin’s side have two consecutive away games against 14th placed Brockenhurst on Tuesday night and Hamble FC on Saturday.
